How much sludge could an exhaust gas cleaning system produce?
The particulate matter removed from the exhaust must in turn be removed from the wash water by a treatment plant to prevent it entering the sea. The amount of sludge not only depends on the amount of particulate but also on the amount of water remaining mixed with it after treatment. A typical amount to be handled would be approximately 0.6 tonnes per 100 tonnes of residual fuel consumed (for a seawater system).
